Trial of alleged mercenaries to be heard tomorrow Print

February 05, 2007 - The trial of eight alleged South African mercenaries implicated in an alleged plot to overthrow the government of Equatorial Guinea, has been postponed until tomorrow in the Pretoria Regional Court.

Tori Pretorius, a State advocate, says this is to give the state and defense an opportunity to hold a pre-trial conference and sort out further particulars.Mercenary accused to turn State witnessMeanwhile, the case against the ninth suspect has been withdrawn. Pretorius says he cannot confirm whether the suspect is turning State witness.

The men face charges of contravening regulations of the Foreign Military Assistance Act. They were part of a group of 61 South Africans released from Zimbabwe's Chikurubi prison in 2005 after serving 12-month sentences there for violating immigration, aviation, firearms and security laws.
