Liberian mercenaries in Guinea Print
22/02/2007 11:16  - (SA)

Monrovia - Guinea has filed a formal complaint to Liberia over the alleged recruitment of mercenaries from its territory to fight in Guinea, its diplomat in Monrovia said on Wednesday.

"I sent a formal complaint (on Monday) to the Liberian government informing them about the involvement of Liberian mercenaries in the Guinean crisis," Abdoulaye Dore, Guinea's ambassador to Liberia, told AFP.

"Though we have no evidence in our possession, from all indications we believe that Liberian mercenaries have been hired by an opposition leader in Guinea to unseat the government," he said.

The diplomat said the Liberian government promised to act. "President Sirleaf promised the Guinean government that she will do everything she can to stop the scourge," said Dore.

Liberia has threatened to prosecute any Liberians involved in peddling soldiers-of-fortune across the border to Guinea.

"Those who are involved in mercenary acts should know that if they are caught they will be prosecuted. We cannot allow our territory to be used for such a purpose," said President Ellen Sirleaf said in a statement on Wednesday.

Rights groups and Guinean military sources, last week, alleged that some Liberians had been hired for mercenary activity in Guinea to shore Conte up in the wake of the mounting unrest that has left scores dead.
