Secret service agent testifies in mercenary case Print
February 22, 2007

Dennis Hilton, the director-general of the South African Secret Service, has testified in the case of the eight alleged mercenaries that the South African government did not give an authorisation for a coup plot in Equatorial Guinea in 2004.

Hilton told the Pretoria Regional Court that claims by State witnesses that the government gave the coup a green light were insulting. He says the mandate of the Secret Service is to prevent such actions. He also says the planned coup was in contravention of South African foreign policy, which aims to prevent conflicts.

The eight accused face a charge of contravening the Foreign Military Assistance Act.
