Democrats unresolved on private military firms Print
May 1, 2007

EAST COUNTY: A resolution to ban private military companies from building in California, such as the training camp proposed by Blackwater USA in Potrero, failed at the state Democratic convention in San Diego over the weekend.

The resolution, which required a unanimous vote to move out of committee, was opposed by delegate Theodore Smith of Los Angeles, chairman of the state Democratic Party African-American Caucus, said Raymond Lutz, East County Democratic Club president.

The largely symbolic resolution called for a ban of all private military bases in the state unless they are on government land. It targets Blackwater's plans to build a training center on 824 acres in the backcountry community of Potrero.

The proposed training center has met with opposition from residents and others who say it would bring too much traffic and noise to rural East County. Opponents have also expressed concerns about the company's role as a military contractor in Iraq. –A.K.
