UN team goes public at USP Print
Fiji Times, May 17, 2007

MEMBERS of the public will have a chance to talk with the UN Working Group on the use of Mercenaries at the University of the South Pacific tomorrow.

An informal consultation between the group and the public will be hosted by the USP's Pacific Institute of Advanced Studies in Development and Governance. Professor Graham Hassall said the consultation would focus on security matters which included the use of mercenaries, privatisation of security and associated human rights issues.

The consultation will be from 1-2pm at the CDS seminar room and is open to the public. This is the UN team's second visit to Fiji.

The members arrived on Monday and are here to conduct a fact-finding mission on the use of mercenaries as a means of violating human rights.

They will report to the Human Rights Council and the UN General Assembly.

The group was established by the UN in 2005 and is composed of five independent experts serving in their personal capacities.

Earlier, a UN working group was sent to Fiji to find out more about the military takeover last December and the events that led to it.
