Security Guards With Records Print
New York Times April 5, 2006

The Army spent nearly $500 million on no-bid contracts for private security guards, some of whom had criminal records, Congressional investigators said.

In a report, the Government Accountability Office said the Army awarded sole-source contracts to two Alaska Native firms that placed security guards at 46 military installations around the country. The report said 89 guards were hired at two bases even though they had records. After the Sept. 11 attacks, with active duty and reserve troops away at war, there was a need for security guards at American bases. Congress approved a waiver allowing the use of private contractors to fill the positions.

The two firms given the contracts were Chenega Integrated Systems and Alutiiq Security and Technology. (AP)
